Te Whiti-o-Rongomai was born during the Musket Wars in 1830. He was the son of a Tohukakahi who was a minor chief.  As a child Te Whiti attended Reimenschneider Mission School in Warea. He was known for Bible Studies because he was so good at. After he left school he started up a flour mill.
By 1840 Parihaka had become the biggest village in the country.  In 1879 the Europeans invaded the land. In 1881 the Europeans began attacking the Maori people and taking away the land unfairly. Te Whiti protested in a peaceful way. Thousands of Maori people were arrested including him. In jail he played mind games on the guards.   He was not allow out when his wife died or attend her funeral. While in prison he learnt how to use Europeans technology. He learnt how to cut plate steel, which he later taught his people. It is thought that he was the first person to use a telephone at theChristchurch railway.

Shortly after his wife died he got released from prison and he went back to Paihaka .  Te Whiti was an inspirational leader because he did not use arms against other people in the war because he was a peace keeper.   Te Whiti always fought for what he believed in and never backed down.

oscars art

This is my artwork based on a piece by Cecilia Russel.  I think  this is one of my best pieces of art  and I am really  proud of it.  Next time I would make my colouring in darker.

Dear Bord of Trustees and Mr Bird,

I am writing to you to request new desks for the senior school.

Firstly, the desks we have currently cannot hold all our stationery. At the moment we use tote trays. These don’t work because we all rush to gather our stationery in the same place at the same time. New desks would be able to hold all our stationery and this problem could avoided.

We all have different desks some with trays, some without. They are all different heights and colours.

The same types of desks would not cause threes types of problems and they would
provide more learning time and more appropriate for the Senior School.

At the moment the years 3 to 6 they are getting better treatment then your current student leaders of the school.  Don’t you think that is unfair? I certainly do.

I hope you take this seriously because our tote trays are in a terrible state and cant  fit  all our stationery. Please make it happen for the senior school.

Yours sincerely,

Oscar McClelland

Mandela was born in South Africa on July 18, 1918. Nelson’s familiar name: Nelson was not given to him until the first day of school by Miss Mdingane. This is because that was the custom among Africans in those days. The name given to him on his birth is Rolihlahla. In Xhosa Rolihlahla literally means “pulling the branch of the tree”, but its literal meaning is “troublemaker”.

Nelson Mandela’s father, Henry had four wives and thirteen children and Nelson was the youngest son. The family lived in three huts which were made out of mud bricks. One of them was for cooking, one for storage and the other hut was for sleeping. Everything they ate they had grown or made them self. When Nelson was nine years old his father died. Shortly afterwards Nelson’s mother said that he was going to leave Qunu which is where he lived.

Nelson fought for the freedom of the black people because he wanted the black and the white to have equal rights. He protested with the black people, did speeches and many other things to get freedom for the black. Nelson went to jail many times because while he was fighting for freedom Nelson did things that the black weren’t allowed to do even though the white were allowed to do it. Because of this Nelson Mandala got sent to jail.

In 1952 the ANC ( African National Congress) designated a new president: Chief Albert Luthuli. Nelson became one of the four deputy presidents and Nelson was the first deputy president.

Nelson has spent most of his life fighting for the freedom of the black and for equal rights for everyone. I think that he was a great man because he knew that the skin color does not matter but it is what’s inside that counts. Because of Nelson Mandela there are now equal rights for everyone in most parts of the world and it has made it a much nicer place to live in.
